The Government of Sierra Leone has officially commissioned the Leicester Peak Viewpoint, A marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to expand its tourism sector and promote economic diversification. The facility was inaugurated by Vice President Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, who described the project as a strategic investment aimed at positioning Sierra Leone as a competitive destination for global tourism and investment. The project was implemented with support from the World Bank under the Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project, an initiative designed to reduce reliance on extractive industries by promoting sustainable sectors such as tourism.
The commissioning ceremony brought together government officials, members of the diplomatic community, private sector stakeholders, and residents of the Leicester community, reflecting broad-based support for the initiative. Developed as a modern tourism facility, the Leicester Peak Viewpoint features well-designed viewing decks, rest areas, eco-friendly landscaping, and essential visitor amenities. The site offers panoramic views of the Freetown Peninsula, combining natural scenery with improved infrastructure to enhance visitor experience. Minister of Finance Sheku Fantamadi Bangura described the project as a major step in the country’s economic transformation, noting its potential to generate employment, particularly for women and young people, while contributing to national revenue.
Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs Nabeela Farida Tunis said the commissioning signals Sierra Leone’s readiness to welcome visitors and showcase its rich cultural and natural heritage. She highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the sector through policy direction, infrastructure investment, and targeted promotion. In his remarks, Vice President Jalloh emphasized that the project represents a shift toward sustainable economic growth, underscoring government’s commitment to developing high-potential sectors beyond mining.
“This initiative reflects our determination to diversify the economy and unlock new opportunities for growth,” he said. He commended the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, and development partners for their collaboration in delivering the project. The ceremony concluded with a guided tour of the facility, offering guests an opportunity to experience the scenic views and modern features of the Leicester Peak Viewpoint. The commissioning of the viewpoint is widely seen as a key step in enhancing Sierra Leone’s tourism appeal and strengthening its path toward long-term economic resilience.
