Guma Valley Water Company Marks 65 Years Amid Service Challenges and Expansion Plans

By Abass Mahmoud Sillah Jr

Freetown, Sierra Leone The Managing Director of the Guma Valley Water Company, Ing. Mariwan Kallon, has reflected on the institution’s 65th anniversary, describing it as both a milestone of resilience and a moment for renewed commitment to addressing the growing water needs of the capital. Speaking in an interview, Ing. Kallon noted that the anniversary symbolizes Guma’s endurance over six and a half decades, despite persistent operational and infrastructural challenges. “Reaching 65 years means that Guma has stood the test of time,” he said. “The institution was established with the primary responsibility of providing safe and reliable water supply to Freetown and its surrounding communities, serving both public and private needs.”

However, he acknowledged that the company has struggled to fully meet increasing demand, particularly as the city continues to expand rapidly. “We are not yet able to provide services at the level we would like, but we continue to make every effort to improve supply and extend our reach,” he added. Ing. Kallon emphasized that Guma’s infrastructure was originally designed to serve a population of approximately 500,000 people—a figure that has since been far exceeded by Freetown’s current population. “As the city grows, demand for water continues to rise. This places significant pressure on existing systems and highlights the urgent need for expansion,” he explained.

To address these challenges, Guma is pursuing strategies aimed at increasing water storage capacity and improving supply reliability, particularly during the dry season when water shortages are most severe. Among the key interventions outlined are the construction of additional storage facilities and collaboration with government and development partners to strengthen water infrastructure. “We are working with the government and our partners to develop long-term solutions, including new storage systems and improved distribution networks,” Ing. Kallon said. He noted that several storage facilities have already been established, with plans underway to initiate additional projects in the near future. These measures are expected to enhance water availability and reduce the impact of seasonal shortages.

Ing. Kallon also highlighted the importance of efficient water management during the dry season, when supply is significantly reduced. “During the rainy season, we are able to store more water. However, in the dry season, we must carefully manage available resources to ensure continued supply,” he explained. He added that rationing measures, including adjusted supply hours, may be necessary to mitigate shortages and maintain equitable distribution across communities. In marking the anniversary, the company is focusing on reflection, appreciation, and faith-based observances rather than large-scale public celebrations. “We are taking time to thank God for sustaining the institution over the years and to reflect on the challenges we face,” he said.

“Our staff remain committed, and we are grateful to the Government of Sierra Leone for its continued support and leadership.” Ing. Kallon reaffirmed Guma’s commitment to improving service delivery and meeting future demand. “We celebrate not just our existence, but the hope that we will continue to evolve and better serve the people of Freetown,” he concluded.
