The President of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists, Alhaji Manika Kamara, has called for stronger collaboration between the media and the legal community to promote the rule of law, protect human rights, and deepen democratic governance in Sierra Leone. Delivering his statement at a Lawyers Society gathering, Kamara emphasized that while unity among institutions is essential, it must not come at the expense of diversity of thought or professional independence.
“Our position has always been clear — we support strong, independent institutions,” he said. “But unity does not mean uniformity, and diversity of opinion should never be suppressed.” He stressed the need for cohesion, mutual respect, and constructive engagement across sectors, particularly between journalists and legal practitioners, noting that both professions play complementary roles in safeguarding democracy.
“This is a national effort,” Kamara declared. “The promotion of the rule of law, the protection of human rights, and the defence of freedom of expression are collective responsibilities.” The SLAJ President urged professionals to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete action in addressing governance and accountability challenges. “As professionals, we must challenge ourselves to go beyond issuing statements,” he said.
“We must invest in social engagement, policy advocacy, and collaborative initiatives that deliver real impact.” Kamara highlighted that democracy is not sustained by isolated efforts but through consistent, principled action driven by a broad-based movement of committed stakeholders. “Democracy is not built by a single working group, but by a sustained and collective movement,” he noted. Referencing ongoing national accountability processes, Kamara pointed to the role of oversight institutions in investigating public concerns, underscoring the importance of transparency and public trust.
He also commended media practitioners for their continued efforts in informing the public and holding institutions accountable, despite challenges within the operating environment. “There is immense potential in strengthening the relationship between the media and the legal community,” Kamara added. “Together, we can advance justice, transparency, and good governance.” He concluded by expressing appreciation for the opportunity to address the gathering and reaffirmed the commitment of the media to supporting democratic development in Sierra Leone.
