“Your Climate Legacy Lives on in Every Shoreline Protected and Every Future You Helped Safeguard” Shout Climate Change Africa (SCCA), publisher of The Nature Newspaper, has paid a special farewell tribute to the outgoing World Bank Country Manager, Amb. Dr. Abdu Muwonge, recognizing his outstanding leadership, commitment and contribution to climate action, environmental protection and sustainable development in Sierra Leone. The farewell presentation took place on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at the World Bank Group Headquarters in Freetown, where the Founder and CEO of SCCA, Finnex J. Asibor, together with his team, presented a special farewell plaque to Amb. Dr. Muwonge in appreciation of his service to Sierra Leone. The presentation celebrated not only the end of his assignment in Sierra Leone, but also the enduring environmental legacy he leaves behind through his support for climate resilience, environmental governance and sustainable development. The farewell message presented to Amb. Dr. Muwonge captured the depth of his contribution: “Thank you, Amb. Muwonge, for standing with Sierra Leone. Your climate legacy lives on in every shoreline protected and every future you helped safeguard. Sierra Leone will forever remember the diplomat who saw our climate struggle not as a distant challenge, but as an urgent calling. As you depart, know that every tree planted, every shoreline defended, and every policy shaped under your watch carries your indelible mark. Farewell, Champion of Green Hope.” The tribute reflects the growing recognition of the importance of leadership that places environmental protection and climate resilience at the centre of national development. In his response, Amb. Dr. Abdu Muwonge expressed appreciation to Shout Climate Change Africa and The Nature Newspaper for their continued environmental advocacy and urged the organization to remain committed to the environmental crusade. He encouraged SCCA and its partners to continue raising public awareness, advocating for stronger environmental protection and keeping climate change at the centre of national conversations. Amb. Muwonge also pledged to continue his climate and environmental commitment in his new destination, the Republic of Malawi, where he is expected to take on his next chapter of service. While preparing to leave Sierra Leone, he emphasized that the country would continue to hold a special place in his heart. His message was clear: the work of protecting the environment does not end with a change of country or position it is a continuing responsibility to future generations. Speaking on behalf of SCCA and The Nature Newspaper, Founder and CEO Finnex J. Asibor expressed deep appreciation for Amb. Muwonge’s contribution to environmental protection and climate action in Sierra Leone. Asibor described the outgoing World Bank Country Manager as a leader whose passion and dedication to environmental issues were evident throughout his time in the country. “We have seen your passion and dedication towards environmental issues. That is why, personally, I see Abdu Muwonge not just as a fighter, but as an environmental royal priesthood,” Asibor stated. He further expressed gratitude for the impact Amb. Muwonge made during his tenure. “We so much appreciate all the great work you did in our country, Sierra Leone. We are going to miss you, but if we had the choice, we would not let you go.” Asibor wished Amb. Muwonge success in his new home, Malawi, and in all his future endeavours, while expressing hope that his commitment to environmental sustainability would continue to inspire leaders and institutions across Africa. For SCCA and The Nature Newspaper, the farewell was more than a ceremonial presentation. It was a recognition of the importance of leaders who use their positions to advance environmental sustainability, climate resilience and the protection of natural resources. Sierra Leone faces significant environmental challenges, from coastal erosion and shoreline degradation to flooding, deforestation, ecosystem loss and the broader impacts of climate change. Against this backdrop, environmental leadership and institutional collaboration remain critical to protecting communities and securing the country’s future. Amb. Dr. Abdu Muwonge’s departure therefore marks the closing of an important chapter, but the environmental movement he supported continues. SCCA and The Nature Newspaper reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying environmental journalism, public education, climate advocacy and national environmental awareness, while encouraging development partners, government institutions, civil society organizations and communities to work together in protecting Sierra Leone’s natural heritage. As Amb. Dr. Abdu Muwonge begins his next chapter in Malawi, SCCA and The Nature Newspaper celebrate a partnership built around a shared conviction: Africa’s climate and environmental challenges require courageous leadership, collective action and an unwavering commitment to future generations. Sierra Leone may be bidding farewell to Amb. Muwonge, but the seeds of environmental awareness, climate action and sustainable development continue to grow. Thank you, Amb. Dr. Abdu Muwonge, for standing with Sierra Leone. Your climate legacy lives on. Farewell, Champion of Green Hope.
