HEALTH TIPS: Why Green Tea beats Coffee when Inflammation is the Enemy

Most people pick their morning drink based on habit, taste, or how desperately they need caffeine. Few stop to consider what that cup is doing at a cellular level. Both green tea and coffee carry plant-based compounds that interact with the body’s inflammatory processes, and the differences between them matter more than most drinkers realize. Inflammation sits at the root of some of the most serious chronic conditions in modern health, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and certain cancers. What you drink every morning may not be a cure, but it is a factor worth understanding. Green tea has been consumed for more than 5,000 years, and its medicinal reputation is not without scientific backing. The drink is particularly rich in a class of antioxidants called catechins, the most studied of which is epigallocatechin-3-gallate, commonly known as EGCG. This compound has been linked in multiple studies to measurable reductions in inflammatory markers across a wide range of conditions. Research published in 2022 connected EGCG to improvements in conditions tied to chronic inflammation, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, respiratory conditions, obesity, and diabetes. A 2024 review found that people with metabolic syndrome who consumed green tea regularly showed lower levels of a specific inflammatory protein associated with tumor progression.

EGCG may also influence body composition. Research suggests these compounds can support fat metabolism by encouraging the body to burn calories more efficiently, a benefit that compounds over time with consistent consumption. Most studies showing meaningful anti-inflammatory effects used between three and five cups per day over a period of at least four to eight weeks. Coffee is not without its own antioxidant credentials. The drink contains chlorogenic acids, caffeic acid, and diterpenes, compounds that have been associated with reduced risk of several inflammatory conditions including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and type 2 diabetes. Caffeine itself may play a supporting role. Some research has found that caffeine can suppress certain inflammatory pathways associated with aging, suggesting the stimulant does more than keep you awake. The picture is not entirely clean, however. Some studies have identified potentially harmful compounds in coffee, including advanced glycation end products, which may contribute to inflammation over time.

What goes into the cup matters as much as what the coffee itself contains. Sugary syrups, flavored creamers, and processed additives can undermine whatever anti-inflammatory benefit the coffee provides, making a black or lightly prepared cup the smarter choice for anyone drinking with their health in mind. When dietitians weigh the two beverages against each other with inflammation as the deciding factor, green tea comes out ahead. The research supporting its anti-inflammatory effects is more consistent, and the evidence linking it to improved health outcomes is stronger and better documented than what currently exists for coffee. Green tea also contains significantly less caffeine, typically around 30 to 40 milligrams per cup compared to roughly 100 milligrams in a standard cup of black Coffee. For people who are sensitive to caffeine or experience anxiety, elevated heart rate, or restlessness from higher doses, green tea offers a gentler and more sustainable daily option. That said, choosing one does not mean abandoning the other. Both beverages contribute meaningful antioxidants to a daily routine, and a morning that begins with coffee and transitions to green tea later in the day captures the strengths of each without overloading on  Caffeine. The best approach is the one a person will actually maintain consistently.
