NPAA Boss Leads Greenbelt Recovery Effort

The Head of the National Protected Area Authority (NPAA) has led a swift intervention and recovery effort in Motormeh Community, Western Rural Area of Freetown, following the illegal burning of a section of protected Greenbelt land. The operation, which resulted in the arrest of a suspect, was carried out after reports emerged that a man had deliberately set fire to a portion of the bush within the ecologically sensitive zone in an attempt to clear land for personal construction.

Eyewitnesses and local authorities confirmed that the fire caused notable destruction to plant life within the protected area, heightening concerns about increasing encroachment on Greenbelt lands. The NPAA response team, led by its Head, moved quickly to contain the situation and prevent further damage. Speaking during the operation, NPAA officials reiterated that Greenbelt zones are under strict legal protection and warned that any unauthorized activities, including land clearing and construction, will be met with firm action.

They stressed that such acts not only breach environmental regulations but also contribute to deforestation, land degradation, and heightened climate risks. The NPAA boss underscored the authority’s commitment to restoring affected areas while strengthening surveillance and enforcement measures across protected zones. Residents of Motormeh Community have welcomed the intervention, describing it as timely and necessary amid rising concerns over illegal developments.

Many have called for sustained monitoring and tougher penalties to deter future violations. The arrested individual remains in custody and is expected to face charges ranging from illegal land clearing to environmental destruction and violation of protected area laws. Authorities continue to urge the public to support conservation efforts by adhering to environmental regulations and reporting any activities that threaten Sierra Leone’s natural heritage.
