HEAT CRISIS: Sierra Leone Must Prepare Now!

As the risk of extreme heat grows across West Africa, Sierra Leone must strengthen its preparedness and raise public awareness to protect lives and livelihoods. Rising temperatures are more than an environmental concern. They can affect the health of market women, motorbike riders, farmers, schoolchildren and other people who spend long hours in hot conditions. Without proper awareness and preventive measures, extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and potentially fatal heatstroke. Preparedness must begin before a crisis occurs. Government institutions, health authorities, environmental organisation, local councils and community leaders should work together to educate the public, share timely weather warnings and promote simple safety measures.

These include drinking enough water, seeking shade, reducing strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours and checking on children, older people and other vulnerable individuals. Radio stations, newspapers, schools and community meetings can play an important role in ensuring that heat-safety messages reach people across the country, including remote communities. Sierra Leone should not wait for a serious heat emergency before taking action. Public sensitization, early warnings and practical preparation are essential to keeping citizens informed, alert and safe as temperatures rise.
