THE GOVERNMENT MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY: Rokel River Is Drying Rapidly

By: The Nature newspaper

Rokel River, one of Sierra Leone’s most important water bodies, is drying rapidly, and this alarming development should trouble every citizen, community leader, and government institution. What we are witnessing is not just a seasonal reduction in water level; it is a dangerous warning sign of environmental neglect, pollution, and climate stress. If urgent action is not taken, the river that has supported livelihoods, agriculture, biodiversity, and local economies for generations may continue to disappear before our eyes. There is hope for restoration, but hope must be matched with action. If human hands have contributed to the destruction of Rokel River, then human hands must also be used to restore it. This is a call to conscience.

The situation of the river is a reflection of what happens when environmental protection is ignored, when mining activities are poorly regulated, and when pollution is allowed to spread into water systems without accountability. The drying of Rokel River is not an accident; it is the result of choices, inaction, and weak enforcement. Shout Climate Change Africa strongly warns that the pollution of rivers through mining and other destructive activities is pushing our natural resources to the edge. Rivers are not only sources of water; they are lifelines for communities, farmers, fishermen, wildlife, and future generations. When rivers dry up or become contaminated, the consequences are severe: loss of fish, reduced access to clean water, displacement of livelihoods, increased disease, and greater hardship for already vulnerable people. The government cannot stand by while this continues. The government must take responsibility for the restoration of Rokel River and other rivers across the country. This responsibility must go beyond speeches and promises.

It requires immediate and practical measures: strict monitoring of mining operations, enforcement of environmental laws, restoration of damaged riverbanks, reforestation of watersheds, protection of wetlands, and meaningful community engagement. The institutions charged with protecting the environment must act decisively and transparently. Polluters must be held accountable, and communities must be empowered to help safeguard their water sources. This situation should remain a history only if the government puts the right modalities in place for restoration. National awareness is urgently needed so that every Sierra Leonean understands that the survival of Rokel River is tied to the survival of our people. Environmental destruction today will become economic and social disaster tomorrow. The time to act is now. The government must lead, the people must participate, and all stakeholders must unite to restore Rokel River before it is too late.  Shout Climate Change Africa calls for urgent action: protect our rivers, regulate mining, restore damaged ecosystems, and secure water for the future.
