The European Union funded YOULEAD Project Titled: ‘Catalyzing Youth Leadership in Decision-Making and Economic Life for Inclusive Development in Sierra Leone,” expands Youth Entrepreneurship, Strengthens Youth-led CSO’s, Provide Graduate Internship Opportunities, and Accelerates Inclusive Youth Development in Falaba District In a bold demonstration of its enduring commitment to youth empowerment and inclusive development, the European Union in Sierra Leone, and Christian Aid Ireland continues to support and champion sustainable opportunities for young people in Sierra Leone through the YouLead Project, implemented in Falaba District by the Global Youth Network for Empowerment and Development (GYNED).
The project is increasingly recognized as a transformative initiative that is redefining youth participation and inclusion, economic empowerment, and institutional growth, particularly in remote and underserved communities where young people face persistent challenges such as unemployment, limited access to capital, weak institutional representation, and limited professional development opportunities. Falaba District, with its energetic youth population and enormous potential for enterprise and innovation, has historically struggled with limited access to structured youth empowerment programmes.
Through the YouLead Project, the European Union and Christian Aid are not only investing in youth livelihoods but also unlocking youth potentials and leadership, strengthening youth institutions, and nurturing local systems that support long-term development. The project is built on a powerful belief that: when young people are equipped with skills, resources, mentorship, and institutional support, they become unstoppable drivers of community transformation and to lead national development and progress. At the heart of the YouLead Project is a strong focus on youth entrepreneurship development, designed to enable young women and men to establish and expand innovative, viable and sustainable enterprises.
Through comprehensive business development training workshops, youth entrepreneurs are supported with practical knowledge on business planning, financial literacy, marketing, customer relations, budgeting, and enterprise management. These sessions are complemented by targeted business refresher trainings, ensuring that young entrepreneurs continuously strengthen their skills and remain competitive in evolving market environments. Many youth beneficiaries have described these interventions as life-changing, by transforming and shifting their mindset from survival-based thinking to long-term economic planning and innovation. A defining pillar of the YouLead Project is its structured mentorship and coaching support, ensuring that youth are not only trained but continuously guided toward sustainable success.
The youth entrepreneurs benefit from mentorship by experienced business experts and development practitioners who provide practical advice on business growth strategies, accountability, branding and marketing, product development, and sustainability. The business mentorship component bridges the gap between training and implementation, enabling youth-led businesses to navigate challenges and grow into stable enterprises capable of generating employment and contributing meaningfully to local economic development. To further reduce barriers to youth enterprise growth, the YouLead Project provides small grant support to selected youth-led innovative initiatives and solutions.
The financial empowerment mechanism offers critical seed funding for business expansion, procurement of equipment, product improvement, and strengthening service delivery. Through a transparent and inclusive selection process upheld by an eight-member Assessment and Selection Committee, the project ensures fairness, accountability, and equal opportunity. The committee, composed of strategic stakeholders including technical experts and community actors, ensures grants are awarded based on merit, feasibility, innovation, growth and ripple effect, inclusiveness, and potential impact. This approach reinforces trust and credibility while ensuring absolute value for donor funds and the resources reach youth with strong commitment and viable business potential.
Beyond entrepreneurship, the YouLead Project is strategically strengthening the ecosystem that supports youth development through youth-led Civil Society Organisation (CSO) capacity strengthening. Under this component, the project is supporting at least five youth-led CSOs across Falaba District with institutional development interventions that enhance governance systems, leadership structures, programme management capacity, accountability mechanisms, and resource mobilization skills. By investing in these youth-led CSO’s, YouLead is building a stronger network of youth-led institutions capable of designing and delivering impactful community initiatives, advocating for youth needs, and sustaining development progress beyond the project’s lifespan.
This approach recognizes that sustainable youth empowerment is not only about individual success, but also about strengthening youth-driven institutions that serve as long-term community assets. Equally impactful is the project’s Graduate Internship Programme component, which provides young graduates with structured professional exposure, workplace mentorship, and hands-on learning opportunities. This component responds directly to one of the major barriers facing young graduates, including limited work experience and reduced employability despite academic qualifications. Through internship placements and practical learning opportunities that greatly benefited volunteer teachers and health workers within the district, the young graduates are gaining essential workplace competencies such as, effective communication, teamwork and interpersonal relationships, standard reporting, project implementation, and professional work ethics etc.
The programme is empowering youth graduates to transition confidently into the labour market while building a generation of skilled professionals ready to contribute to national development and service delivery within Falaba District. The YouLead Project also places strong emphasis on strengthening youth governance structures through the active engagement and capacity development of the Falaba District Youth Council. Recognizing the critical role of the youth council in coordinating youth voices, advocating for youth priorities, and promoting inclusive participation, the project is supporting the youth council through training, engagement platforms, and strategic collaboration. This support enhances the council’s ability to represent youth effectively, engage stakeholders responsibly, and contribute to policy dialogue and community development processes.
By empowering the District Youth Council, YouLead is ensuring that youth leadership is not symbolic, but structured, informed, and impactful. Importantly, the project has benefited from a productive and highly collaborative partnership with the Falaba District Council, whose leadership continues to provide institutional support and local governance alignment for the effective implementation of the YouLead project activities. This mutually fulfilling partnership reflects the project’s commitment to local ownership and sustainability, ensuring that youth empowerment interventions are integrated into district development priorities. Through continuous engagement with the District Council, the project has strengthened coordination, transparency, and stakeholder participation, enhancing the enabling environment for youth entrepreneurship, civic engagement, and institutional development.
In addition, the YouLead Project promotes youth leadership and civic participation, empowering young people to take active roles in community development, decision-making, and social cohesion building. The project’s inclusive approach ensures that young women, marginalized youth including persons living with disabilities, and youth in remote chiefdoms are reached through equitable access to training, mentorship, grants, and institutional support. This gender-responsive and inclusion-focused strategy contributes directly to reducing inequality and strengthening community harmony across Falaba District. Through its implementation approach, the Global Youth Network continues to demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and technical excellence in delivering the EU and Christian Aid supported youth empowerment interventions.
The visible growth of youth-led enterprises, the strengthened capacity of youth-led CSOs, the empowerment of graduates through internship placements, and the strengthened collaboration with the District Youth Council and Falaba District Council collectively illustrate the project’s far-reaching impact. YouLead is not only supporting youth to survive, it is empowering youth to lead, innovate, and create transformative and sustainable change. The YouLead Project is more than an intervention; it is a powerful movement of hope and opportunity. It demonstrates that investing in young people is not charity, but the most strategic pathway toward sustainable development, peace, and prosperity. As youth-led businesses thrive, youth institutions grow stronger, and young graduates gain employable skills, Falaba District is steadily becoming a model of what is possible when youth are empowered with the right tools and trusted with responsibility.
